The Enhanced Combat Helmet (ECH) was developed in response to a 2009 USON to produce a helmet that provides ballistic protection from selected small arms ammunition and fragmentation, yet maintains all other characteristics of the Marine Corps’ Lightweight Helmet (LWH) and the Army’s Advanced Combat Helmet (ACH).
Description
The ECH consists of
- a ballistic protective shell,
- pad suspension system, and
- 4-point chinstrap/napestrap retention system.
and will include other accessories such as helmet cover and night vision goggle mounting bracket. .
Unlike the ACH/LWH, which are constructed with aramid fibers, the ECH is constructed using ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene fibers.
The ECH is compatible with, and is typically worn in conjunction with other components of infantry combat equipment such as Body Armor Systems, protective spectacles/goggles and/or prescription glasses, night vision equipment and a camouflage fabric helmet cover.
The ECH is of one Type (tactical cut) and two Classes, which are differentiated by their retention systems:
The Ceradyne Advanced Combat Helmet (ACH) is based on the performance requirements of the U.S. Army for ballistics, impact, retention and other protective upgrades.
Lighter than the previous PASGT infantry helmet, the ACH features a pre-drilled Night Vision Goggle (NVG) bracket hole. The helmet shell trim also eliminates the beak and has a higher side trim than the PASGT. The helmet also includes an improved 4-Point Retention and Pad Suspension System, which attaches at four points to the shell with ballistic resistant hardware. Adjustment slides are located on both the front and rear of the retention, allowing adjustment for proper fit and stability.
The Water Resistant Pad Suspension system supplied with each helmet consists of one crown pad, four lateral pads, and two front and rear pads. The pads are 3/4-inch thick.
